Ask the Paddlers…

Curt is our interviewee for March 2002. He usually paddles in the engine room (seats 3-9), and is the boat captain for Sunday practices.

Q: Why do you like to paddle? What magic does it hold for you?

Curt: Water sports and boating never cranked my handle, but dragon boating is so much fun, I can't wait for practice. The people in this sport are a lot of fun, and paddling on Puget Sound is great.

Q: How do you mentally prepare for competition?

Curt: I have found that 14 minutes of power napping is all I need to focus and recharge my batteries.

Q: What do you eat before a workout or to refuel afterward?

Curt: Eat light four to five hours before practice. Eating heavy before a hard workout would be bad. I have to admit, a beer sounds so good, but I usually eat my regular foods.

Q: What do you eat before and after competition?

Curt: Coach would like us to load up on carbohydrates the day before a race. I like most pasta, so that is no problem. On race day, high energy foods do the trick, and a lot of water to stay hydrated.

Q: How do you control your weight without compromising your nutrition?

Curt: I've never had to watch my weight.

Q: What kind of training do you do in the off season that helps your paddling?

Curt: I am new to this sport, and have had no real plan. Dragon boating has been a good reason to get the bike out of the garage. I do more pushups and use my abs slide daily.

Q: How to you balance an over-demanding schedule?

Curt: I work hard to keep my schedule manageable. Play time is just as important as work.

Q: Do you have any advice for new paddlers?

Curt: Timing and technique are the most important parts of paddling. Take water in the boat, stay hydrated, and have fun.
