Ask the Paddlers…

Diana is our interviewee for April 2002. She usually paddles in the engine room and occasionally strokes.

Q: Why do you like to paddle? What magic does it hold for you?

Diana: Paddling for me is a spiritual high. I look out and see beauty. What a privilege! It also feeds my competitive nature.

Q: How do you mentally prepare for competition?

Diana: My focus is totally on what is happening in my boat and what the boat captain is telling us. I focus on: relax, relax, relax. Then we race and I kick some b---!

Q: Do you have any superstitions or lucky charms?

Diana: I'm not a superstitious person. My motivation and inspiration comes from a power much greater.

Q: What do you eat for a jolt of quick energy before a work out or to refuel afterward?

Diana: Nothing before. I need to have my stomach empty. I do drink lots of water, and afterwards, lots of carbs.

Q: What do you eat before and after competition?

Diana: The night before I eat carbs and protein. Just water before the race. After competition, I eat a good meal that includes protein.

Q: How do you loose weight without compromising your nutrition?

Diana: My #1 method is exercise. Weight lifting and cardiovascular training works best for me, at least five times a week. Most important is to be consistent with paddling and the weight just melts away like butter.

Q: What kind of non-paddling training do you do off-season that helps your paddling?

Diana: My greatest success is with weight training. I do not lift heavy weights, but moderate weights with more reps.

Q: What training do you do that’s very different from paddling?

Diana: Weight lifting and aerobics.

Q: Any motivational advice for novice paddlers?

Diana: Once you get over feeling like you are a fish out of water, things keep gettin' better and better. You get that feeling like there is nothing you can't do.

Q: Are good paddlers born or made? What do you do to improve/gain an edge in each practice?

Diana: I definitely feel made with motivation and training from our excellent coaching staff. Improvement comes from consistency, and working on different aspects of paddling.

Q: There are a number of substances in the saltwater Thea Foss Waterway, where you practice. How do you get the Au de Thea Foss scent off after practice?

Diana: I didn't know I had a scent afterwards. Oh, no! But I do take a good hot shower after practice.
