Ask the Paddlers…

Genny is our interviewee for May 2003. She paddles in seats one, two, eight, and nine.

Q: Why do you like to paddle?

Genny: Because it is fun and exciting. Paddling is a team effort, so it's not just one person who wins the race, it's the whole team working together to accomplish the same goal. This gives the sport a different challenge. It's also great exercise and helps me focus on my health.

Q: How do you mentally prepare for competition?

Genny: Relax the night before the race. This will help prepare me for the race because I know I will be using a lot of energy that day.

Q: What do you eat before a workout or to refuel afterward?

Genny: I try to eat at least two hours before I workout or race. This gives it enough time for the food to digest. I don't eat very heavy before a workout or race but afterwards is when I eat a well balance diet. I also drink plenty of water to keep hydrated.

Q: How do you control your weight without compromising your nutrition?

Genny: To control my weight I eat a well balance diet. I also make sure I do enough cardio workout to burn the calories I consume.

Q: What kind of training do you do in the off-season that helps your paddling?

Genny: I go to the gym 3-4 times a week.

Q: How do you keep your lats and shoulders from getting tired?

Genny: My shoulders and lats still get tired from time to time during practice. I also lift weights to build my muscles so they are more conditioned. This helps so they don't get as tired while paddling.

Q: What kind of training do you do in the off-season that helps your paddling?
Genny: In the off-season I still paddle one day a week and I go to the gym.

Q: How to you balance an over-demanding schedule?

Genny: When something is a part of your life you make time for it. So paddling is a part of my life.

Q: Do you think that good paddlers are born or made?

Genny: Good paddlers are made. It takes a lot of time and practice to become a good paddler. You also need to listen and take constructive criticism.

Q: Do you have any advice for new paddlers?

Genny: It's a fun sport !! Come out and try it, you will love it.
