Aura is our interviewee for July 2003. She
paddles in the engine room.
Q. Why do you like to paddle?
Aura: I love water sports; swimming, diving, water skiing, river rafting, canoeing and water aerobics. When a friend introduced me to the dragon boating I knew that I would enjoy it and sure enough, I was hooked since my first try! After a long and exhilarating workout coupled with cool breezes from the water and beautiful waterfront scenes, I can't think of a better way to unwind. Of course, an occasional beer bust at the Swiss after practice would top off the day of fun!
Q. How do you mentally prepare for competition?
Aura: I still consider myself as one of the "newbies" and I only participated in one major race, Alcan in Vancouver, Canada. First I panic; second I seek comfort and assurance from experienced paddlers. And there are many wonderful paddling friends whom I have met during my short time with TDBA. Those wiser paddlers tell me that we have done it before at practice and we will do it again…just focus and we will be fine! They were right!!
Q. What do you eat before a workout or to refuel afterward?
Aura: One of my favorite hobbies is eating. I like to eat cereal and fruits for energy before workout. After that? Anything goes and provided that no one is watching…as long as I can have everything with a bowl of rice!
Q. How do you control your weight without compromising your nutrition?
Aura: I just exercise more. I also do Tae Bo (boxing exercise) and Winsor Pilates 2-3 times a week. Speaking of Tae Bo, you're right…I may be short but you wouldn't want to mess with me as I could easily punch you in the knee!!
Q. How do you keep your lats and shoulders from getting tired?
Aura: I focus on technique. I'm still learning but I notice that I am getting stronger every day we practice.
Q. What kind of training do you do in the off-season that helps your paddling?
Aura: This is my first season for dragon boating. I will continue to do my regular exercise to stay in shape. And oh! Don't forget nutrition. Eat and eat good food.
Q. How do you balance an over-demanding schedule?
Aura: It is part of my daily/weekly schedule. I put it on my schedule same as other appointments.
Q. Do you think that good paddlers are born or made?
Aura: Just like any other sports, you practice, practice and practice to perfect technique and gain strength.
Q. Do you have any advice for new paddlers?
Aura: Come and try it! You will be convinced that this sport could easily be the only one you ever want to do.
