Ask the Paddlers…

Merri is our interviewee for August 2002. She usually strokes and is a key organizer for our race event food table.

Q: Why do you like to paddle? What magic does it hold for you?

Merri: It's hard to describe the magic, but it's definitely there. I feel very passionate about paddling. I like to paddle together with my team as one paddle. It's a good feeling when everything "flows", and you all get in your "zone".

Q: How do you mentally prepare for competition?

Merri: I try not to think too much about it, so I don't get nervous. I always want to win, but when it comes right down to it, it's all for fun.

Q: Do you have any superstitions or lucky charms?

Merri: Yes, my Japanese charms that keep bad spirits away.

Q: What do you eat for a jolt of quick energy before a work out or to refuel afterward?

Merri: Lots of water, a bagel, and some fruit.

Q: What do you eat before and after competition?

Merri: I eat the same as above before a competition, but afterwards, I eat lots of Breyers Oreo Cookies and Cream ice cream. Ummmmmm!

Q: How do you loose weight without compromising your nutrition?

Merri: I run and lift weights, and I walk all day for my job.

Q: What kind of non-paddling training do you do off-season that helps your paddling?

Merri: I run, row on a rowing machine, and lift weights.

Q: What training do you do that’s very different from paddling?

Merri: I run and lift weights more often.

Q: How do you keep your lats and shoulders from getting tired while you’re paddling?

Merri: They don't get too tired. Carla, at my gym, has developed a program just for paddling. It's helped a lot.

Q: There are a number of substances in the saltwater Thea Foss Waterway, where you practice. How do you get the Au de Thea Foss scent off after practice?

Merri: Wash every stinky thing right away!

Q: Are good paddlers born or made? What do you do to improve/gain an edge in each practice?

Merri: Both. Anybody can be taught to be a good paddler. People who are blessed enough to born with paddling abilities, understand the technique a little better, and are willing to share their natural abilities.

Q: Any motivational advice for novice paddlers?

Merri: Come down and try it! You'll love it!! We're a great group of people. I've made a lot of wonderful friends, which is the best benefit I've gotten from paddling.
